The transport of 80 sailing yachts
For the sailors of the Mini Transat, the 26th of September 2021 was the date they all had been waiting for. That day, the sailing competition took off from Les Sables d'Olonne, France, and was headed for Saint-François, Guadaloupe. During this yearly event, sailors cross the seas for about three weeks in an effort to prove that they are the fastest team on the ocean. It is a magnificent race, straight across the Atlantic Ocean. But it is only a one-way track – so how do the yachts make their way back home, back to Europe? This is where Vertraco steps in.
As soon as the race comes to its end in Guadaloupe, our job begins.
As soon as the race comes to its end in Guadaloupe, our job begins. With a team of ten experienced stevedores, we load no less than 80 sailing yachts on board of our Beautrader. Every team- and crew member plays an indispensable role in ensuring that every single yacht comes on board without a scratch.
Not only men, but also machine is needed in this delicate task. Nylon straps, designed to move without scratching, lift the yachts out of the water. Once above deck, they are very carefully lowered again, where precision is of the essence to safely leave the boats secured in the so-called 'cradles' – big supports that secure and support the yachts. The yacht is tied up, and the team goes on to pick up the next one.
After a two-week journey across the ocean, the yachts are unloaded in Lorient, France. After four to six hours of work, we are ready for another job. We are always excited to see which adventure the ocean brings us next!
