‘We do it together’- culture

Annet.jpg09 Feb

A year and a half ago, Annet van de Graaf, traded her job at a listed shipping company for a job at Vertraco. Her reason? Our ‘We do it together’-culture.

“In terms of work the content of it at Vertraco didn’t differ that much from what I was already doing, but for me, that wasn’t even the most important thing”, Annet starts, “More important is that the atmosphere at work is good. Starting from the first interview I already had a good feeling. I immediately noticed that there was a ‘We do it together’ culture, rather than ‘I am your boss, so you do what I say’. That immediately appealed to me.”

Annet is now responsible for accounting within Vertraco. “I do everything that has anything to do with invoices and payments. Book invoices, transfer payments to suppliers, and process incoming payments. The latter can really be quite a challenge sometimes. We sometimes receive payments from Suriname without a description from a private person. Good luck trying to find out which invoices belong to them. It is a nice puzzle.”

New system

Currently, Annet is also involved in improvement in accounting. “Now the documentation department worked with a different programme than the one I am working with. Soon we will both switch to one new program. This will lead to many benefits. For example, this will allow me to quickly connect payments and assignments and several things will soon be automated, where I still do a lot by hand right now”.

It felt like stepping into a warm bath from day 1. This feeling makes me show up at work with great pleasure.

An added advantage is that Annet will have more time to make reports. “Once a month I create a report for managers Jan and Benny. Thanks to the new system I don’t only have more time to do this, but I can also analyse other things much better. That is also important. You could think ‘things are going well, so why would you?’, but it remains important to see where you can still improve things. Now I am often too busy to map things out properly, but soon I will have more time and possibility for this.”

Warm bath

Together with the managers and the financial adviser from Vertom Annet aims to have the new system ready to go in January 2021. “We mainly look at what we want to emphasize, where the system offers us the most added value. I really enjoy doing it. I am actually always looking at how something can be done better or differently. In this way, I really enjoy working for Vertraco. However, as I already said, the atmosphere is even more important. It felt like stepping into a warm bath from day 1. This feeling makes me show up at work with great pleasure.
